Compared to other games that are much more resource-intense, DayZ runs like balls. I have a i7-3770k (overclocked to 4.4 GHz), a GTX 680 (2 GB), 32 GB of RAM, and 2 SSDs in RAID 0.
This is more of a trick for more beefy computers to run DayZ better as Arma is horribly optimized in terms of resources consumed. This RAMdisk trick would be a bad idea beacuse you barely have enough RAM to run everything as it is. The Radeon HD 5650 and i5-450M were mediocre 4 years ago, especially in a laptop. This is a very bad thing as it causes disk thrashing from all the input/output operations to the hard drive which should be actually taking place in RAM where there are no moving parts. Sorry for the bad analogy, but the hard drive is like a very fast, magnetic record player: Picture Think of it as an emergency "outsourcing" of memory to the hard drive, which is by far the slowest device on your computer. Your computer is now running on 3GB of RAM instead of 4, so when DayZ + Windows + whatever else you have running in the background runs out of room, it pages any additional memory to your 500GB mechanical hard drive. And you already said the game runs like shit as it is. This leaves 3GB of system memory available to run DayZ, Windows, etc. If you reserve, say, 1GB as a virtual disk, you're basically converting 1GB of RAM into a super-fast 1GB "hard drive". 4GB of RAM isn't enough to run a RAMDisk and get any performance gains. You didn't specify your OS, so I'm assuming Windows 7 (64-bit?).

I will play Dayz later tonight to let you know my FPS but I just wanted to give you a quick update and tell you thanks. Not nearly as smooth as DayZ, but typically if I am getting only 21-25 fps it jumps all over, and this time it was not.

But, probably because I removed all the old drivers it also ran super smooth. With everything maxed out I was only getting 25 fps (not in DayZ) which is where I set up the virtual drive. By that time, the server I usually play on was busy so I just went ahead and ran Arma2 OA to see what my FPS was.

No stuttering at all, which I did have before.īut then I logged out to reinstall the driver for my on screen display. I turned AA all the way up, everything was set to VERY HIGH and it was beautiful. Running Dayz, I did not know what my FPS was because Driver Fusion took my driver that displayed my onscreen FPS, but Dayz ran smooth like never before. It found a bunch of old drivers and registry things so I deleted them all and reinstalled. In all fairness, prior to doing as you instructed I was in the process of using a program that removed ALL the drivers from my system (Driver Fusion) and then I reinstalled them all using Slim Drivers (both free programs).
